only losers can mix properly... [Oct. 5th, 2005|01:23 am]
[music |the presets - worms]

rove rocks out
rove, tess and the presets

presets weekend was so good. they were wicked on both nights but seduction was definitely a better night; cool atmosphere, 360 degrees of wallpaper, more bands, less freo, etc.
the mass band+crowd=stage bit at the end was great, i thought that something might have been knocked over or stepped on but no, everything went smoothly in electro-rock harmony. fun times.
our amateur dj guestspot went alright. someone lost the soundtrack for the drag act so we had to go on early while they found it. then we came on for our actual timeslot later. nobody danced (not quite as bad as it sounds, it was only 9:30) except for the lady with the python, but she was getting paid to do it. to our surprise, we also got paid. it would have been cool to play live but we (quite obviously) don't have our act together yet. the presets were brilliant live. live vocals, drums and synths. they put on a really good show. very meaty sounds. silkie krusher & the sex's sex army uniforms and new track were awesome. also, electric limosine were rocking the vampire aesthetic like it ain't a thing, nice one.

on sunday night, we did the 6-6:30 slot to a crowd of about 3. after a few minutes we got cut off so that the sabretooth tigers could do their soundcheck (support djs for the soundcheck, rollin' thick). after that we started again, and my parents rocked up which boosted the crowd to 5. one of the other djs pulled out so we went again after the sabretooth tigers finished, embarassingly we were sort of running out of wicked tracks towards the end (we didn't bring much with us). some guy asked us if we had any drum n bass. i don't know who went and got his hopes up like that. the presets were fantastic again, as were silkie krusher & the sex.

if anyone has any good (or otherwise) photos from the night, please lay them on us.

here are a couple of shots from the night )

thanks to the bourgeois bogan familia for inviting us into the weekend, jess for taking the photos and everyone who came along on either night and said hello / gave support in times of awkwardness. also, apologies to everyone who came on sunday night before 6:30.

6 days, 4 jams, productive... [Sep. 26th, 2005|11:18 pm]
[music |van she - filthy licks]

the new-look seven seas had another jam today. went well. didn't go backwards or anything. the bits that need to be worked out should hopefully be worked out soon.

so yeah, a while ago we absorbed ed into the seven seas line-up. kicking it live on bass and filthing up the mic, he completes the seven seas like the 'synth-garage' trio we were always destined to be. starting out as a seven seas fan, he has finally reached the dizzying heights of being in the band. known, during his fan days, for following the band in a van and then leaning out the window shouting "OH MY GOD IT'S THE SEVEN SEAS!", you know that ed is down with the cause.

ed

please go to seduction on saturday night.

update + presets support... [Sep. 26th, 2005|11:59 am]
[music |ollie & jerry - showdown]

the seven seas line-up has now been expanded to include ed on bass and also some vocalising. things are working out wicked. got some songs together and are going to sort a rough-as-a-kingston-rudeboy demo out soon. the demo (and probably some photos) will be up here soon.

the seven seas are supporting the presets on their west coast dates, not playing, just dj'ing )

seduction on saturday night - be there or be L7

i think the stereo is on the verge of chewing up my Breakdance (aka Breakin') OST tape, this would be tragic. it's not like i can just eject it because then i won't be able to listen to it at all (the terrorists will have won). panasonic powerblaster rx-es30 please do not let me down.

the seven seas had a lot of fun in melbourne. now that we're in the same country we're going to have a go at actually putting some tracks together. in other news: the seven seas made their first foray into the world of (non-wedding-based) dj'ing on sunday night, and it too was a lot of fun. expect more in the future.

wolfmother weekend... [Apr. 20th, 2005|12:41 am]
[music |a.s dragon - mais pas chez moi]

saturday the 16th of april, at swan basement, and sunday the 17th of april at amplifier, wolfmother:

andrew de wolfmum

whilst swan basement is quite the naff, saturday night wolfmother is quite possibly the best show i've ever been to. eclipsing the datsuns and sahara hotnights at globe a couple of years ago. wolfmother, so rock 'n' roll. think of any positive rock-related cliché, apply it to this set, and the equation proves to be correct. i'm sure that there are people who will write andrew off as being someone who just rocks the big chords and that's it, but they're wrong, he shreds it up on any given whim or fancy. i can barely comprehend, let alone explain, how throughtheroof wicked this gig was. the hot guitar cutting through. the substantial creamy tones milked from the korg. any bass you could ever hope for under the sun. drumming that makes me look at my drum machine and question it's existence. the falsetto. the dancing. the rock moves. it all tesselated in rock harmony. more bands should work this out, or wolfmother should just tour more often.

the crowd were a bit agro though. what were all the liveboys doing there? did they really need to carry on with the "aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi" bit? did they really need to start a ruck? what kind of girl wears heels to a (wolfmother) gig?

ruck pros and cons )

snowman were the first supports. awesome set, def better than sunday night's (where they played for less time because the taller guitarist snapped strings on however many guitars, and the frontman had some guitar drama too). snowman rule. i dig the reverb-everb-verb-erb-rb-b'd surf-guitars and falsettos. bassist's dr blight fringe is also cool.

i'm no longer getting into seeing the panda band live. too straight, too samey. however, i do feel a bit sorry for them, you're never going to rock the shop when you're playing after snowman and before wolfmother. i still like the tunes though.

on sunday night, i only managed to see wolfmother's encore, it was still good, but didn't leave me all "...!" like saturday night did. understandable, considering on saturday night i was in the writhing/throbbing mass feeding on rock and marinating in sweat.

word on the street is that saturday night was better than sunday night anyway.

oz is a rock 'n' roll machine, word up to you comrade.

sux venue, off crowd, awesome show.

new gear again... [Apr. 15th, 2005|01:22 am]
[music |black box - ride on time]

i bought a new amp the other day. it rules. it's a vox brian may special. but more importantly, it is white and gold and puts out hot british invasion tones.

can you hear the kinks?

i'm also getting some wicked soviet cameras.

rove is o/s now. i am flushed an autumnal shade of mint with envy. rock on rove.

shane at [info]studiotvl has been very prolific in his output lately. the quality is throughtheroof good. his cover of cat power's "you may know him" is quite a gem. i heartily endorse it. check it out if you can.

our friends (and/or rival band, haha) the frenzy have been jamming a bit, and pending on the whims and fancies of their lead singer/talent, may have a gig coming up in the near future.
the currently trans-continental seven seas have no such gig coming up and have had few jams of late. this is all going to change upon the return of rove (which i may allude to in the future as 'the ror').

rove, did you take a notepad and maybe a pen with you? no songs about campfires though, lets make that a band rule yeah?

i went and saw 'dig!' with [info]wyered on sunday night, i really enjoyed it. the burning smell throughout most of the movie was a little bit alarming though. i suggest you see this documentary if you can. for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about, check this out.

'dig!'-related news: zia mccabe (dandy warhols) has cool synths - a moog prodigy and a korg ms-20, amongst others. a brian jonestown massacre 'best of' entitled "tepid peppermint wonderland: a retrospective" has come out. the dandy warhols are bringing a new album out soon called "odditorium or warlords of mars" (probably), i hope it has some new wave bits. nb: rove hates the dandy warhols.

wolfmother are playing in perth on the weekend, i'm looking forward to it immensely.

brisbane's death:wolf have chucked a babylon zoo.

new gear : roland [Mar. 23rd, 2005|11:20 pm]
[music |general electrics - frost on your sunglasses]

as previously mentioned, the seven seas have been racking up some new gear in the new year.

a post about rove's share of the new gear accumulation will come soon (?), but for now, it is just me advertising my lack of self-control when it comes to money.

studio shoebox, at present
studio shoebox maaan

roland - new gear for 2005 so far

20ft of hosa midi cablepink lunchbox from big w
smokey ampkorg table monitor already dead
pedalsle drumbox
nyc big muffprunes and custard
microkorg!the squenderjag

1. 20ft of hosa midi cable. i colour-coded the tips in accordance with my adoration of french comp "so young but so cold"
2. the lunchbox that i hold some cables and adaptors in
3. the smokey amp, one watt rock, telephone tones maaan
4. the korg table monitor, was extremely cool for $25, but alas not cool enough. it is now dead. it's my fault really
5. 18' lengths of fender cali cable in green and purple
6. zoom rt-323. massive bargain purchase. like nick zinner's drum machine, but better
7. electro harmonix nyc big muff, pretty cool, but soon to be swapped with [info]studiotvl for a russian ehx big muff
8. crowther audio prunes & custard harmonic generator-intermodulator. very hot pedal (def beats big muff), i can see why the datsuns wrote a wicked song about it
9. the microkorg! this synth has some detractors, but i think it rules. you hear them everywhere now (maybe you don't, but trust me).
10. squier by fender jagmaster ii - the squenderjag. ooh yeah

i also now have a tambourine, but i bought a cheap one in the hope that it would sound cool, how wrong i was, it sounds awful, and thus is not ready for its close-up.

once rove gets back from uk / usa / costa rica / tonga, the seven seas are go. like voltron but more inept.

plantlife [Mar. 19th, 2005|05:59 pm]
[music |the futureheads - hounds of love]

these people enjoyed plantlife on thursday night
roland ed tim tess

thursday the 17th of march, at monkey bar, plantlife:

jack splash de plantlife

air of excitement. jack splash. ten piece band. no pretention. wicked, wicked night.

i would like to thank the people of northbridge for pulling guns and knives out at metro, your efforts equated to the gig being moved to monkey bar, which i def prefer to metro (home of r&b superclub).
i was really amped for this gig, as were some others. i've had the album on fairly solid rotation for the last couple of weeks, but have been marinating in "appreciate", "star dancer" and a couple of other tracks for a few months now, getting tender.
critics here and there are saying how plantlife are a "postmodern mix of eclectic rara", but i think that if you start using words like "postmodern" to describe plantlife, then you are missing the point. the band* came on stage, set up a nice swell of chilledospheric tones, jack splash saunters on, picks up the mic, and then BAM, raw soul, funk, new funk, touch of electro, all the while with slinky slinky falsetto and whatever else it's meant to be. ooh yeah. if you didn't make it to the show, and perhaps went to gomez instead, you have my condolences.

*the band: drums, percussion, synths/keys, trombone, trumpet, guitar, bass, backing vocals x2 and dj/samples - all getting so loose whilst synced up in such a deceptively tight manner. i really dig these bewildering paradoxes.

the highlights for me were "why'd u call me? (3am)" and "jack's back".
the former somehow managed to drip even more sex than it does on the album.
the latter is the intro to the album and only goes for 30 seconds, but only went for 15 seconds on thursday night because they chopped out the opening sample, it didn't matter though because it was still throughtheroof hot. they could have just performed that on loop for the whole set and i would have been incredi-happy except for my head probably exploding from my brain going "HOW GOOD IS THIS!" too many times.

jack would be bounding around getting hyped off mammoth grooves and just igniting the mic, and then drop into "dr love sex me up sex me up sex me up right now ladies"-mode ever-so smoothly, this man is made for the stage. and he wears sunglasses indoors, at night, jack splash rules.
in a world where prince has become a mormon and no longer performs the sexy songs, it's a massive comfort knowing that jack and his posse are roaming the globe pushing this gear in such a wicked fashion.

so good. so so good.

i really need to get a decent camera sometime soon.

-rols

ps. afterwards, out the front of city kebabs, three emo-punkers (standard piercings, hats, belts and simple plan shirts) came within about 2cm of getting their heads kicked in by two very agro metal guys (one was bald and irish, the other was wearing a 'cannibal corpse' shirt). i (synth-rock / prince fan) was wearing a pink polo with a blue paisley cravat. if a ruck had broken out, it would have been an amusing sight.

big day out - a week after... [Feb. 13th, 2005|10:30 pm]
[music |the presets - mia's mouse]

a week ago today was big day out ( / duxton rock weekend) 2005.
you've already read everyone else's posts, and have most probably seen a lot of the photos, but this entry is going ahead anyway.

wolfmother were so good

shane was present, having made the journey from a faraway land, as the annual third member of the limited edition seven seas. roland and shane check in to the duxton at lunchtime on saturday, the chemical brothers are standing next to us at the front desk, we share a lift with them, dialogue kept to a minimum by us as they both look a bit tired (some might even say frazzled) and we sense that they too are keeping dialogue to a minimum.

get to the club room, set down the gear (synth, guitar, cables, drum machine, distortion, cables, phaser, cables, cables, etc) and discover that there are speakers in the roof and that the room has a cd player. we insert at the drive-in, fail to figure out how the (reasonably straightforward) amp unit works, and accidentily blow all the speakers in the roof - bass will never be the same in room c115 again.

later, rove arrives, then departs. even later, jess arrives.

time somehow passes us by and shane, jess and i find ourselves having dinner at the (faux) italian accross the road from the duxton, sat next to the donnas - a happy coincidence? they're rather friendly and enthusiastic to talk, except for the bass donna, who breaks up our pow-wow and robs us of the other donnas. speaking of the donnas, they dedicated a song to shane.

later, back at the hotel, we're at the duxton bar. powderfinger (powderwho?) are in the corner trying to be cool, bernard has been there for at least 8 hours (zero exaggeration). phil from grinspoon is walking around in double denim, nobody (not even the floozies) cares. rove goes to the toilets just as i get a photo with mike skinner. mike skinner tells me that my shirt rules and is wicked, the next day he is wearing the same one on stage. skinner rocks some fairly serious bling.
the streets' entourage, the music, the donnas, the seven seas and the chemical brothers were also present (as were slipknot and system of a down).

the next day was big day out day.

seven seas bdo fashion was flowing thick and fast

top marks to rove for having the most wicked shirt at the entire big day out

rove's highlights
the streets
the beastie boys
the lightning speed at which kebabs were being prepared
the safety position

rols' highlights
wolfmother: "we're gonna play 'love train' now, and get loose" + love train
the streets: wicked threads + never wanted the set to end.
the beastie boys: lounge jazzism + "gratitude" + organ-vaulting
me telling tom rowlands (tall chemical brother) about the kind of stuff that i'm making and where i'm getting my influence from, and then him telling me that i'm "the sound of 2005" with conviction and a complete lack of sarcasm. + my message to both chemical brothers.

def communal highlight
the entire duxton rock experience

after the actual big day out is over, we return to the duxton. robert harvey from the music is sitting on a chair by himself, appearing somewhat hollow yet simultaneously comfortable. a few words are exchanged, he's cool, and we're off to the lift.

back to the club room. for anyone who may be unaware of the club room vibe, please see Fig. 1 for an explanation.

Fig. 1:

[CHOOSE YOUR OWN SEVEN SEAS ADVENTURE: instead of rove de robe, do you want to see roland standing on a chair? turn to page 73 now]

best of blondie was played on the blown ceiling speakers. showers were had. guitar was rocked. synth was ravaged. noise complaint was made. afterparty ahoy!

afterparty was incredibly wicked. met pelle. talked to the chemical brothers. camille chatted up phil from the music. quan (le 'gurge) didn't take me serisouly. shane almost tuned the prettiest donna. scribe left with singer donna (what?). met andrew from wolfmother and busted some super-heavy diy dancefloorwreckers with him. also chatted to him about cut copy. andrew is a very cool person, if you want a second opinion, ask jess (but not if you're in a hurry). phil from grinspoon showed some redeeming qualities by ipod djing for a while and playing (amongst other tracks) : kenny loggins' "footloose", prince's "i wanna be your lover", the bangles' "walk like an egyptian" and "word up" by cameo. jess, rove, roland, shane & kate were dance-bandits and synchronically tore the roof off tha sucka whilst burning the disco out, off the wall! however, one member of the posse could not be swayed, not even by that wicked microkorg bit in "drop it like it's hot" (which is a pretty naff track otherwise).

a photo was taken with pelle, however, to protect the integrity of the individuals involved, pixels have been entered into the equation. [really, nobody other than pelle looks good in this photo. conclusion: never even contemplate smiling when a camera is in the vicinity]

kate and camille left after a while. vibe decreased, but the dance lived on for some time. jess made several exclamations. shane took amusing photos and video footage. roland sadly learnt that ipod dj phil grinspoon did not have "dancing with myself" by billy idol. rove passed out, only to find himself in an advanced state of undress on the bathroom floor hours later ...in the dark (to an extent, i feel your pain rove. who could forget australia day?*).

last year, the seven seas + shane were chased away by security guards whilst trying to 'break' in around the back.
this year, everything pretty much fell into place. and the bits that didn't fall completely into place, didn't go pear, which is a plus. 2005, big day out afterparty rock success.

massive thanks to everyone involved: shane, jess, rove, kate, camille, christian, doorman who took the wall photo last year, ed, and housekeeping unit delta.

the killers - continued... [Dec. 17th, 2004|01:04 am]
[music |new order - this time of night]

tuesday the 14th of december, at city metro, the killers:

due to the events of wednesday morning, i'm in no position to give any sort of review that isn't packed with "the killers are so wicked!"-style bias. but anyway...

betchadupa were average. mediocre-core, if that. nothing special. catalogue-carl-fringe was alright.

the killers, however, were fantastic.

brandon was looking sharp, dressed quite similarly (although definitely sharper) to michael ashcroft (aka the gambino).
hair-wise, dave was maintaining a happy (but less black) medium between marc bolan and robert smith (not an easy manouvre).
ronnie was rather busy being a champion drummer and adding some colour to the non-frontman section of what really was 'the brandon flowers show'.
mark was just chillin' out. nice one mark. it would be great if him and patrick matthews formed a band. might look like this, maybe.

"believe me natalie" and "everything will be alright" were the only album tracks to not get a play. not a major issue, a floyd cover and "under the gun" both made it into the set.

brandon was synthing out (on a microkorg and a clavia nord lead 2) like the vegas-synth-pop-noir-ringleader that he is. ooh yeah. downer that it ended when it did, another 45 mins would have ruled. speaking of what rules...

thanks to ed for the lift home. massive thankyou to camille for the rather expensive water. mammoth thankyou to rove for turning my lighter-waving-git-during-indie-rock-n-roll dream into a reality (yes, i am aware that the track is a piss-take). monolithic thankyou to jessica for the ticket, it was a very synth-rock xmas.

after that we went home and watched arrested development, which rules (regardless of what camille says).

the morning after, we drove in to the city. i had to pick my parents up from the sebel and take them to the airport. rove needed a lift in to buy some presents. camille needed a lift in to catch a train home. how fortunate we are.
we rock up out the front of the hotel and dad strolls up and goes something like "rols, hurry up, i've been chatting with the killers in the foyer". so we went inside and had a bit of a talk with the killers, got photos, got a testimonial from brandon, got a communal killers get-well-soon note for kate (camille's idea? rove's?). rove and ronnie had the same shoes on (two separate pairs though). ronnie dished out hamper-goodness for kate and filled camille in on how she's cool. i talked to brandon about synths, new order and pulp. they were all really friendly (you could even go as far as saying 'super friendly') and accommodating. goodbye blue tarago. goodbye killers, condolences on flying to adelaide.
massive mammoth-proportioned monolithic thankyou to dad for the heads-up and for parking the car whilst we killer'd, and to mum for the notepad.

camille has already posted these, but i'm going to do it again anyway.

summer in the studio... [Nov. 30th, 2004|12:14 am]
[music |the concretes - you can't hurry love]

more equipment has arrived at studio shoebox.

new additions: keytar, guitar, effects, ghettoblaster.

keytar: yamaha shs-10 synth & midi controller. not only looks wicked but also controls the softsynths via midi.
guitar: squier (squender) stratocaster, in surf green (ooh yeah). seymour duncan detonator pick-ups, for extra JANG. rocks out rather severely. big thankyou goes out to paul.
effects: the danelectro 'pepperoni' phaser. a bit more depth in the phasing would be good, but for $25 it rules. has many practical applications.
ghettoblaster: toshiba bombeat sw5. more on that here. in addition to providing audio in the bathroom, it's cool as a d'amp'ener. big thankyou goes out to jess.

new gear is good as it leads to expanded capacity and potential, but at the same time it slackens the rope on creativity and can fuel procrastination (something which we don't need any more of).

the mixer has now been promoted from being just a 3 channel dj mixer, and is now also the seven seas' mixing desk and part-time arpeggiator/transfrom box. going well so far, better things are yet to emerge from it though.

the seven seas' site is getting better at the moment, and will soon feature a gearlist for anyone who cares enough to have actually read this far into the post.
